Happy Easter to all!

Since Easter Sunday is tomorrow I thought I blog sbout what Easter is all about. It is not about Bunnys and Chocolate Eggs! When through the web and I think the article is a good summary about what Easter is all about to Christians!

Easter Sunday is the day of rejoicing that follows the sorrow of Good Friday and Holy Saturday. For most Christians, Easter is the celebration of Christ's resurrection from the dead. It bears witness to God's enduring promise of eternal life. As the climax of Holy Week, Easter is a time of hope and assurance. It is humanity's turning point from destruction to glory and salvation.

What is the Real Meaning of Easter?
For the first three centuries, the Church celebrated the real meaning of Easter in connection with the Jewish Passover. The Passover began on the evening of the full moon in the Jewish month of Nisan, which coincided with the Spring Equinox. As the crucifixion occurred on the first day of the feast, early Christians found a scriptural correlation between Jesus and the sacrificial lamb. The Apostle Paul refers to this in his first letter to the Corinthian Church where he states: "For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth." (1 Corinthians 5:7-8)

The flexibility of Passover allowed the early Church to celebrate Christ's resurrection any day of the week on which the third day of the festival happened to fall. As the Western Church began to emerge, its celebration of Easter coincided with the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring, which caused some contention with the Eastern Church. The matter came to the attention of the Emperor Constantine, who convened the Council of Nicaea in AD 325. The council ruled that all churches would celebrate Easter on the first Sunday after the first full moon of the Spring Equinox. This became the standard for the Church under the Julian calendar until 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII revised the calendar and the Easter tables by adding the leap-year rule.

What are Easter and the Resurrection?
The name "Easter" did not become associated with the resurrection of Christ until the second century. It most likely comes from the ancient Saxon spring festival called Ostern. Some Easter customs also originate from ancient spring festivals. The tradition of the Easter Bunny has its origins with the Saxons, who would adorn their villages with rabbits carved from wood. The giving of brightly colored eggs was a custom in the Middle East during the spring. In many cultures, the egg symbolized rebirth or renewal. Easter is a time of rejoicing for Christians. The Roman Catholic, Anglican and Greek Orthodox Churches commemorate the resurrection of Christ with the Easter Mass, which includes special prayers, litanies, psalms and hymns. In some Churches throughout Spain, Easter customs include special processions to honor the Virgin Mary. Protestant Churches have Easter services that include Communion, special sermons and sometimes Easter plays.

Many Evangelical Churches have sunrise services that include much singing and rejoicing. The purest meaning of Easter is the celebration of the resurrection or rising of Christ to heaven, which is the foundation of Christianity. Easter Sunday reminds all Christians of their heavenly calling and of the open door for relationship with God through Jesus, His Son.

Congratulation Dato Ambiga!!

The 2009 recipients of the Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage Awards are:

“Gender equality is a responsibility of all Malaysians.”
Malaysian Bar Council President Ambiga Sreenevasan is a high-powered, high-profile advocate for good governance, democracy, and human rights.
Elected in March, 2007, Ms. Ambiga is the second female Bar Council president in that organization’s history. Six months after assuming her leadership, she organized the “March for Justice,” in Malaysia’s administrative capital, calling for judicial reform and investigation of a tape allegedly showing a key lawyer fixing judicial appointments and judges’ case assignments. Her public actions, and an intense lobbying campaign, led to a Royal Commission and a finding of need for corrective action.

Ms. Ambiga has also consistently supported the rule of law during her tenure, condemning the politically-motivated arrests of two journalists, and the government’s banning of an ethnic Indian activist group and arrest of its members. Ms. Ambiga’s most controversial work is in the areas of religious freedom and women’s rights. She has assertively confronted sexism in Parliament, taking her case directly to the public when necessary. “Gender equality is a responsibility of all Malaysians,” she wrote in a press release that protested a politician’s patronizing remarks. She successfully fought to amend Malaysia’s Federal Constitution to ensure that women’s testimony would carry equal weight to men’s in Shari’a courts. She continues to fight for the religious freedom of women who convert to Islam upon marriage. Under current law, these women are not allowed to return to their original religions on dissolution of the marriage, regardless of the reason for its termination.

As a result of her attempts to find legal solutions to issues that continue to generate inter-ethnic tensions and constitutional problems, Ms. Ambiga has received hate mail, death threats, and had a Molotov cocktail thrown at her house. Hundreds of people from religious groups and conservative members of government have protested at the Bar Council building and called for her arrest.

In a country with a potentially volatile religious and ethnic mix, Ms. Ambiga has courageously persevered in seeking answers from within the rule of law, and worked relentlessly and energetically for that legal and governing structure to be made more transparent, accessible, and equitable to all.

Going into hiding!

As the day draw nearer to Najib's being crown PM of this country, I am beginning to pull back some of my blog entries.

I believe that the prosecution of innocent lives over the freedom of expression has already began! And I am sure the days will only grow darker as Najib gets closer to become PM!

I don't like it! and I if I had my own way I will probably not care, but I can't be so selfish.

Since my blog has my detailed profile, I have to restrain myself.
So if my entries disappear it is because I have taken it down.

Why are my action controled by fear of evil men?!?!?
But I really hate myself for this!!

Malaysian Humor!

Have you seen the Made-in-Malaysia car 'Kancil'? You know, that very little 600 cc car ???
Well, Dr M really wanted to sell it to the US , so when Dr M paid a visit to the White House after finishing formal discussions with George Bush, Dr M checks with Bush to find out if there is a way to sell the Kancil in the USA .
After having looked at the brochure, Bush said, You know, I think this 'Kernchill' is too small for us Americans.
Not one who gives up easily, Dr M persisted and finally Bush offered, 'Ok, take this number down. This guy is my good buddy and he's also the CEO of the biggest compact car distributor in North America '.
Dr M was satisfied with the meeting and returned to Malaysia. The next day he called the number and a lady answered, 'TOYS R US', Can I help you'

Mr. Sami-Velu went for the recent United Nations' Meeting. He represented the Malaysian Prime Minister. All nations were discussing about space exploration by the year 2003. Here are some of the conversations:
China Delegate : 'By 2003, China will start their moon exploration project.'
Russian DelegZate : 'We too, we are going to explore the moon. This time we will see to it that our cosmonauts will step on the moon.'
George Bush : 'We the United States will also explore the moon for the second time.'
Malaysian Delegate: 'By 2003, Malaysia will explore the sun.'
There was a long silence. Bush stood up and asked the Malaysian Delegate: 'Isn't it too hot to explore the sun?'
Sami Velu(after a long silence): 'We will do it in the evening.'

There are three major races in Malaysia - Malay, Chinese and Indian The Malays have the political power and so they set up the party UMNO, which literally means 'U Must Not Object'.
The Chinese, on the other hand, controls most of the economy and they called their party MCA which means 'Money Conquers All'.
Then there are the Indians who have no say in politics or economics. They set up their party called MIC. Hence, every parliamentary meeting the Indians would ask: 'Must I Come?'

Dato Ambiga visit to my college!

Quite some time since I blog...by my standard lah!

So much to shoot about all BN Bulls*!t but nowadays there are just too many to write! The situation feels so hopeless!

HOWEVER!!!!....

Today Dato Ambiga, President of the Malaysian Bar Council came to my college and spoke about the Malaysian Constitution and answered some question about the current political and legal situation in Malaysia!

She spoke about...
1. How Malaysia's Constitution came about and etc.
2. Talk how Malaysia's Constitution provides for freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion and etc.
3. How she disagree with the Printing Press Act, the Police Act, Sedition Act, Internal Security Act and etc.

Base on the question ask by the student and the student's reaction and Dato Ambiga's answers..... I found renewed hope in the future of Malaysia.

Now I worry for my students!

I know most of them will go on to study in good universities overseas and become good lawyers, doctors, engineers and etc.

But how many of them will come back to fight the good fight for the sake of Malaysia?!?
Even I myself am cynical enough to think about leaving Malaysia to go to another country!

If all this good citizens of Malaysia would come back to Malaysia to serve their home country and to fight for its democratic process then maybe Malaysia has a chance to get out from this political rot that it is currently in!

Why Malaysian Film Industry will never grow!

I woke up one day inspired to write this article! I really don’t know why! Maybe because I watch too much movies!

Last month president to the National Film Development Corporation, Ahmad Puad Onah said that the association would propose that ticket prices for Hollywood movies be increased to RM20!!

This is suppose to help the local film producer become more competitive! However it is sad that these people really have they not learned anything from the Proton case yet!! This suggestion is a really shallow idea and it will not help local film to be more competitive against foreign movies. In fact this will have an opposite effect!

So the question is why isn’t Malaysian watching the local movies?!?!

Think about it!?!? Who are the demographic that actually go watch movies?!? Can the middle income Malay family with 4-5 kids afford to watch movies price at RM8-12 per ticket?!?! 4kids plus mom and dad will cost a family RM10 x 6 = RM60. Add the parking ticket, and snacks and it will cost at least RM100 just for an afternoon watching a movie!

So if these people want to watch a movie, what do they do?!? You guess it!!! Buy illegal DVD at RM7 per disc and the whole family can watch over and over again!!! Then just buy a packet of “kuachi” or peanuts that cost less than RM5 and you can enjoy an afternoon together watching a movie and it will cost only RM12.
(So solution No.1 is to enforce the law against illegal DVD sales!...although this would put a dent to those authorities and VIPs who are taking bribes from this industry!)

So who then will go to the Cineplex?!? I would have to say that it would be couples or young people with their friend’s right?!? However these people have a limited budget as well! If they have to choose between watching Spiderman or Cicakman, which show do you think they will watch?!? Are these young people going to care about supporting our local film industry?!?

So what would attract this young generation to watch the local films?

Can local films ever match Hollywood in terms of visual effect, star power, or even in promotional marketing activities of Hollywood films?!

So how then can they compete against Hollywood movies?!? The answer is nearer than you think! Just look at our neighbors. Both Thailand and Singapore have managed to produce films that are very successful, even on the international stage!

So why can’t Malaysian film producers do the same?!?!

The reason is simply because they are too afraid to offend the “authorities”!! There are too much control, taboo, restrictions and censorship in the industry. It has come to a point that any movie that comes out from the local industry will almost sure to be too safe, dull and boring!!

Also the movies that come out aren’t controversial, provocative and have little to offer the local Chinese, Indian and Malays races as a whole!

Just take a look at our local news recently. We have an exciting by-election, JERIT issue, HINDRAF issue, ISA Issue, Hudud law issue, many corruption scandals, murder of a Mongolian gal and a conspiracy with our DPM, sex parties with movie stars, the plight of a poor mom that can get her child back even through she has found her after 2 YEARS and the list goes on!!!
Now why would I ever pay money to watch local films when our local news in Malaysia is a whole lot more interesting?!?!

However do you think our local film producers are brave enough to turn any of the issues above into a movie?!?!

If our local film produces had produce film related with any of those issues I mention above, I am sure it will get a whole lot of publicities and many people will watch it! Why?!?!
Because….
All Malaysian can relate to this!
It is very provocative and this will generate curiosity and publicity among many Malaysian.
It is not competing directly against Hollywood movies! (Blue Ocean Strategy)

Also when was the last time we saw a movie that appealed to the whole Malaysian audience as a whole? Local movies are usually categories as either Malay movies, Indian movies or Chinese movies! Where are the Malaysian movies?!?! Let’s be honest! How many Chinese will go watch a Malay movie?!?

Local producers must learn to makes films that appeal to the broad spectrum of societies as a whole and not segregate movies by race! What’s wrong with movies that speak Chinese, Hokkien, Malay, Tamil, and etc in the same movie! We do that in our everyday life. So why not in our local films as well?!?

I know it is not easy to produce films that will appeal to the whole country. Thus local film producers must be ready to face the challenges of making movies that would be very controversial politically and socially. We can no longer be afraid to makes movies that are racially or religiously sensitive. Now I am not asking the producers to make films that insult other races or religion. Neither am I asking that the producers make politically charge propaganda films. But we can still make movies that reflect the true status of our country and show that the human spirit can trump over many adversities!

With regards to this I have a list of ideas that I think will make great movies and I am sure that most Malaysian will pay to watch!

1. Sex Parties! KL dark secrets revealed! (this is not a porn movie!!)

2. Police Corruption (Tales of a young police officer facing huge peer pressure to compromise his conviction from taking bribe and the persecution he face from not taking any bribe!)

3. A Malaysian Political Spoof Movie!! I bet you it will be very funny getting actors imitating our local politician…especially Samy Velu)

4. Who really killed Altantuya?!?! A mystery movie with an “open ended” ending (allowing viewers to make their own decision!)

5. Prostitution in Malaysia! Tales of a young local gal with little education being conned into prostitution! (Again this does not have to be a porn movie!)

6. HINDRAF!/JERIT!! Why! (this could be a documentary movie!)

7. May 13 the accounts of those who still remember!!! Tales of 3 friends (a Malay an Indian and a Chinese guy whose relationship were strain to the breaking point and they were force to choose their allegiance but the manage still to overcome this adversities and remain friends to this day!)

I am sure a lot of people can still think of many more ideas that will make great movies. I am sure many of these potential movies will make certain groups unhappy. But that is the whole point isn’t it?!? A safe and nice movie that does not raise any eyebrows will not interest the Malaysian public at all (considering they get so much more entertainment value from the local news)!

Until local film producer are brave enough to challenge the status quo of proper protocol, ethics, taboos and produce films that are honest, relevant to all walks of life in Malaysia and challenging to the mind & culture of our society, they will never be able to compete with Hollywood movies!!
